What the heck is a dongle?
A dongle is a small security device that plugs into your computer so you can run FlowJo. The advantage of the dongle based license is that you can install FlowJo on many computers, and move the dongle around. Warning: moving the dongle will greatly increase the chance that it gets lost, and we do not replace lost dongles.
Version 7 and 8 dongles, called thumbdrives, are Plug-and-Play. Insert the dongle into a USB port and open FlowJo. No drivers to install. You can see this dongle as a storage drive in the File Manager. It has a license key file in it. The dongle will not work without a license key. You cannot copy the key to create another thumbdrive.
Although FlowJo Version 7/8 uses a different USB dongle than Version 5/6, you can upgrade your V5/6 dongle to V7/8 if you prefer. If you wish to keep your older Dongle click here to upgrade it.

To upgrade your current Dongle...

--From Version 4(Mac), 5 (Win) or 6 (Mac) -
- Download the desired version of FlowJo.
- Launch the new version 7(win)/8(mac) with your older dongle plugged in.
- When you see the version 7/8 license alert screen, please select start upgrade button which will take you to the appropriate FlowJo upgrade web page.
- Please complete the information on that page and enter your invoice number.
- Your dongle ID number will appear in the Dongle ID box.
- Click on submit and your request will be sent to Tree Star, Inc.
- Once we receive your upgrade request, we will email an activation ticket number to you.
- Start FlowJo and paste this number into the original upgrade dialog by the box that reads Paste that ticket here:
- Click on Complete upgrade. The upgrade process is complete and you will be able to use FlowJo version 7/8.
To see your dongle's Unique ID Number:
On the Mac:
- With the dongle plugged in, just open the latest FlowJo software, the number is displayed on the License Alert screen.
On the PC:
- With the dongle plugged in, open the latest FlowJo software and select the HELP menu.
- Click the Installation Help button.
- Control-shift-click the About Dongles button.

If the dongle light goes out, download and install the drivers...
- Attach the dongle to an available USB port on you computer or keyboard.
- Download the driver installer here or copy it from the FlowJo CD.
- Double-click on the compressed installer file to un-stuff it.
- Double click the extracted installer and follow the installation instructions.
- Restart the computer.
Older Versions of FlowJo and Their Dongles.
ADB or USB dongle?
Dongles come in ADB and USB flavors. Older computers (Macs with the old style gray case) usually have ADB ports. The current generation of computers (iMac, blue G3, G4, G5, Intel-Core) have USB ports. If you wish to use dongles on both types of computers, there is a third party adapter made by Griffin Technologies.
NOTE: FlowJo Version 4,5,6 etc. only run with a new USB dongle. This dongle is not the same as the version 3 dongles. When you upgrade from version 3, we will send you the new dongle (click here for more info on upgrading).
How come my USB dongle is not recognized by FlowJo?
Version 3: There is an extension that needs to be installed for the USB dongle to work. If you look on the CD that came with your USB dongle, you will find the extension as well as instructions in the Installation Instructions folder. Specifically, copy the MachaspusbDD extension into your extensions folder and then restart your computer. You can also download the USB dongle extension here.
Version 4: You need to run the V4 USB installer. If you look on the CD that came with your new USB dongle, you will find the VISE installer as well as instructions in the Installation Instructions folder. Double click to launch the installer. You can also download the USB dongle installer here.
Do I need a new extension for my USB dongle to work with system OS X/9.2?
Version 3: If you have a USB dongle and have upgraded to OS X/9.2, you will need a new extension/driver for your dongle to work. Download the new USB dongle extension here. Copy the MachaspusbDD extension into your extensions folder and then restart your computer.
Version 4: The version 4 USB dongle needs to be installed. Run the V4 USB installer to install the correct extensions.
