The Sign function provides a way to authenticate your data. It will run the original file through a special function that will produce a number. Any changes made to the file will cause it to produce a different number.

Therefore if you produce the number now, send it to someone else, that e-mail will later serve as proof that you had the files and the date of the e-mail will prove when.
